A mysterious building stands on the hill, bathed in a twilight light. Amazed by the Pagoda's strange aura, you decide to investigate it. Suddenly, laughter, a shadow that is not yours, and an eye with ominous pretensions come to life. You have broken the peace of ten powerful Japanese spirits (called Yokai) that rest there! Will you find a way to calm their wrath?

A game of Yokai Pagoda is played over 3 rounds, always playing one card at a time, until someone ends the current round. To play a game, shuffle the 100 number cards (divided by 10 types of Yokai, numbered 1-10), place two cards face up to start the two discard piles, then deal seven cards to each player. Place the rest as the Pagoda deck, among the discard piles.

Try to even out the balance between lost cards or keep the exact amount you need to reduce your score when the other player ends the round. In Yokai Pagoda, knowing when to give up a card, continue playing, or end the round makes all the difference!

Shirak was just a child when Hiroto left on his journey across the empire. Even then, the young lord made a considerable impression on the juvenile Shirak. Of all Shiho, Shirak never lost faith that Hiroto would return and lead the family back to glory. Shirak has sworn to see the Shiho rule again and will die trying.
Like many Shiho samurai, Shirak costs remarkably low Rice for his abilities.  This is, of course, due to his 2 Melee Pool.  If you can use the many ways in faction to overcome this low statistic, you have a profile that can vastly outperform its Rice Cost expectations. Sixth Sense is also a welcome addition.

Very few kitsune master the requisite discipline and aptitude to become a Queen’s guard. Only the very best among already exemplary warriors can fulfil this role. Their stone-faced stoicism and sheer wrath in battle make them some of the empire’s most fearsome combatants. They believe in death before disrepute and will gladly lay down their lives supporting their Queen and everything she stands for. Senshi is the epitome of this. Fearsome, loyal, lightning-quick on the battlefield with an annoying habit of being precisely where he needs to be while the enemy prays hard he will appear elsewhere.

Kitsune and Temple of Ro-Kan players always like to see the Vitality Ki Feat giving extra activations when needed. Senshi’s array of Traits - including Adept and showing combat results other models cannot achieve - make him good on his own. His unprecedented Bodyguard range of 6” is not just a defensive tool but an excellent positioning option. The Kitsune are a fast, early-game warband, with the Sublime Daisho offering a late-game boost where needed. This could prove invaluable.

Life in the peaks of the Iron Mountains is harsh and unforgiving. It is a place of snow, ice, and blizzards, not one of second chances or mercy for the weak. There are but a handful of beings or beasts that can live in such an ungodly place and thrive. One such creature is Yuyokuma, a bear of prodigious size and strength with a shared soul affinity with the Minimoto clan, who worship bears as their ancestors did.

Like many Minimoto models, Yuyokuma asks your opponent just one thing: can you deal with this? The big bear automatically knocks down his melee opponents, has superb melee statistics and traits and is tough to kill in return. He will likely also inflict penalties from Frightened and Prone Markers in addition to having Melee Pool 4 as his base. This bear embodies the Minimoto’s ferocity and fighting spirit and is at home in any Minimoto themed Warband.

“Father, you say we are the Bear clan, but what is The Bear?” asked a young Minimoto girl while she and her father ate supper. 

Outside, barreling past the house, an unstoppable barrage of metal and flesh crashed into a yet unseen attacker. Akasuki rained blow after blow down on the interloper, allowing it no defence and no chance of survival. Throughout this bloody combat, Akasuki bellowed and snarled like a mother bear defending her cubs, with that terrifying sound dropping to a low growl once she eliminated the threat standing over its mangled body.  The father looked up from his soup and pointed toward the victorious samurai.

“There. That is The Bear.”

Odamu is typical of the Hoshi family. Their ways are old, uncorrupted by what others deem new or modern. Visiting them is to journey back in time regarding speech, manners, food, and attire. Hoshi Odamu is no exception. He wears armour most newer samurai have never even seen! However, his close relationship and proximity to the Minimoto clan ensures his blades and garb are still the most exemplary in Jwar. Because he has the blessings of the Bear Mon, he is at home fighting alongside his Minimoto allies. He has, over some time, developed a deep and heartfelt affinity for the great bears that call this place home. He feels it almost spiritually, a meeting of minds when both bear and Odamu are near one another. He cannot speak their tongue but has connection enough to lead these ferocious beasts into battle. He likes the wilds and spending time with the bears, following them into areas so cold and remote that another person would perish in moments. Not so Odamu; Hoshi's blood warms his veins, and the Hoshi are famed for enduring extreme cold and foul weather.

Finest Steel players will welcome this new samurai. Odamu is a challenging prospect on the field. Not only does he have a high number of Wound Boxes - as well as Armour 4 - but he punishes any would-be aggressors with Held, and often also Slow. But this is where it gets interesting: he also deals damage in return when wounded! With Armour (4) and the ubiquitous Just a Scratch card, this often deals more damage than Odamu takes!

Takashi Akio, Kumiko's father and sensei at the Takashi Koryu, shapes the next generation of Dragon samurai with his techniques and style. Despite excelling in swordplay, his daughter Kumiko decided to walk another path upon reaching age. Initially furious, he thought she was trying to disgrace him. The Takashi samurai asked Takashi Hagane to challenge Kumiko, ending a perceived waste of Kumiko’s talent. However, Hagane refused to test the girl's mettle, saying, “She has nothing left to learn; she is already among the greatest duelists of her generation.” Hagane’s words returned to the headstrong Kumiko, who has since opted for the sword over the brush. 

During a discussion, players asked for more female samurai and cheaper to make thematic lists, such as seven samurai and an all-warrior woman Blood of the Dragon list, so with a low Rice cost for a four-dice samurai and the necessary Critical Attack (1), she will most definitely be found on the list!

A stunning beauty with bold white hair and features that an artist could have carved from ice, Machiko is the envy of many of her peers. Her mastery of the Hoshi’s inheritance allows her to cast deadly icicles that can penetrate even the most robust samurai armour.

She can deny her enemies of defence and cover while opening up new lines of attack for her companions. Not only does this model offer a ranged attack and superior terrain destruction ability, but she also brings Blizzard, which allows you to recruit the Reflection Kami and provides a benefit for all other shugenja, should you wish to play a more Hoshi leaning list.

The relationship between the Minimoto and the bears, that also call the mountains surrounding Jyoto home, runs deep. Whilst being from one of the smallest breeds of bear on the island Tetsu more than makes up for his diminutive size, charging with a ferocity and force that can overwhelm all but the most steadfast of opponents. Surviving the charge of Tetsu is the first plan, what to do next is even trickier.

If a member of the Imperial Family hadn't visited her camp, Zhongwei might have remained a highly competent but overlooked gunso in the Golden Legion. The Emperor’s cousin, the Imperial Prince, who had received orders to inspect the troops, visited her camp. However, the enemy of the West learned of this and launched a mission to assassinate or capture the Prince.

Though they only reached the outskirts of the camp and never got close to their target, the Prince’s daughter was walking near the perimeter, collecting wildflowers, becoming the focus of the thwarted attack. Over a dozen enemy warriors close d in on the young girl, and when the others finally sprang into action, they found Zhongwei pierced by arrows shielding the young girl. Zhongwei's selfless actions earned her much praise and led to her being taken to the capital to convalesce.

While there, the emperor, thankful for her bravery in saving a favoured niece, bestowed much praise, declaring her under his power alone. The exact meaning of this remains unclear. Perhaps it was a reward to shield her from lesser nobles' interferences? Or maybe he in tended a commission in the Golden Sentinels? All that is known is that the Imperial scribe wrote beside her name, “A rank second only to the Emperor." High praise indeed, regardless of the meaning.

The Shiho have many practitioners of Kyudo, and Misaki is as proficient with a bow as any of her generation.

Misaki has a strong melee profile alongside her Dai Kyu to defend herself when enemies try to engage her. Her Precision Ki Feat works on her Katana and her Dai Kyu so she can deal damage in combat.

Wu Shuo has tirelessly battled the emperor's adversaries in the Western territories for as long as his memory serves. He endured a gruelling campaign that consumed thousands of samurai and ashigaru daily. This war without end prompted the unpopular initiation of conscription in the Prefectures.

General Wu Shuo, a veteran of more than military conflicts, hides his true feelings as he is merely a vassal of Emperor Song, knowing what to say and when to say it. His rise to the top has not been meteoric, quite the opposite; it has been a long, detailed process of one foot in front of the other for a very long time, but this has garnered him support, both at court and among those he commands, those of the Golden Legion, fighters nearly beyond compare.
